Communities - Working Together PDF Print E-mail

together_00.jpg Acting in a sustainable manner as an individual is relatively straight forward, but the challenge is to create a sustainable culture in a shared context.

Working together as a community is so much more powerful in terms of achieving sustainability on this planet.

This could be as a family living sustainably together at home.

It could be acting together with your colleagues in your work environment whether that's an office, school or outdoors.

Or it could be pulling together with your local neighbourhood community through communal venues or meetings.

On the Trail...

The Older Person's Information Centre (T.O.P.I.C. House) is mainly for the over 50's although helps to build cross-generational links. Topic House provides an environment for older people to meet and get support, removing barriers to information or support, and breaking down the potential for physical and emotional isolation that many older people may feel, especially if they are living on their own. This helps to build a stronger and therefore healthier community that respects and recognises the value of individuals within it... a better community for everyone.

Mumbles Development Trust (MDT) is a non profit-making limited company with charitable aims concerned with regenerating Mumbles through community self-help projects and schemes.  MDT encourages people to make a difference in their local community by promoting active citizenship through community consultation and volunteering.  These are just some of the MDT initiatives and projects:

  • Mumbles Green Action Team have been engaged in annual beach cleans at Blackpill, litter picks and clearance work at various sites which link to provide a green wild-life corridor from Clyne Valley to Mumbles Head and Caswell Bay. The Trust encourages participation in protecting, valuing bio-diversity and enhancing the local environment.
  • Mumbles Local Produce Market provides an opportunity each month for people to meet and buy directly from local producers which reduces energy used in transport, encourages healthy eating and supports the local economy.
  • Mumbles Matters  newsletter provides a forum for local people to express their views.  It can be accessed at www.mumblesmatters.org.uk and the 11:25 young people's news and views exchange is at www.1125.org.uk.  These publications inform the community and promote engagement in local activities and issues.
  • 9 Mumbles Development Trust believes individuals are capable of creating a better society through a direct and positive contribution to their community.  The Trust is committed to empowering people to become involved in their community and improve the quality of life for a sustainable future.

Rosehill Quarry Community Park
A six acre green oasis nestling amongst dense housing, containing a huge variety of spaces and wildlife.  It was saved from development by local people pulling together to persuade Swansea Council to designate the land as a Public Open Space and safe guard it as a space for wildlife and recreation. The local people formed the Rosehill Quarry Group which continues to exist and manage the site for nature and people. The Rosehill Quarry Group welcomes the involvement of local people in planning and caring for the site. The Group organise activities and events throughout the year. Look out for posters at the site!

Red Café in Mumbles provides a safe place for young people to learn and develop new skills outside of the normal school environment and often out of normal school hours. Glide is their award winning initiative which works with disadvantaged young people in Swansea and it promotes the building of young people's self-esteem and relationship by developing understanding in Sustainability and Global citizenship. The Red Café exists through the cumulative efforts of the local community who recognised that a permanent place for young people was needed.

Gors Primary School is one of several Eco Schools through out the City and County of Swansea. The Eco-Schools programme provides a simple framework for school communities to analyse the way they operate and become more sustainable. Visit www.eco-schoolswales.org.uk for more information. Gors has achieved the top award in the Eco-Schools programme for consistent high standards achieved by the whole school community working together.
